AstroPixel
Explore enormous space images without overwhelming the browser
AstroPixel turns large astronomical images into browser-friendly tiles. I built the upload pipeline, deep-zoom viewer, annotations, and access controls from end to end.
Large image files need to be processed, stored, and delivered at several zoom levels without making the viewer wait for the entire original file.
GDAL creates a multi-resolution tile pyramid. OpenSeadragon requests the tiles visible at the current zoom level, while FastAPI handles ingestion, metadata, authentication, and tile delivery. Cloudflare R2 is supported for cloud tile storage.
AstroPixel placed third at Ideation Competition 3.0. It is a working, independently built deep-zoom product with image upload, tiled viewing, annotations, and administrative workflows.
Technical Specs & Highlights
